Alfreton Town continued their pre-season preparations with a hard-working display in a 1-0 home defeat against a very slick-passing Sheffield United side who included latest signings Lyle Taylor and Conor Coady as well as Calum McFadzean - brother of former Red Kyle.

In front of 406, the Blades dominated possession in both halves but Alfreton stuck steadfastly to their task and in the end could have grabbed an equaliser as late chances were created.

After Paul Clayton had spurned a first half chance for the Reds, United grabbed the only goal of the game on 54 minutes when Lyle Taylor fired home from close range after home keeper Ross Atkins had parried a Sean McGinty shot.

Atkins pulled off several superb saves on the night and was named as the Reds man of the match. 

Alfreton are back in action on Saturday with another attractive home game when League One side Port Vale are the visitors to the Impact Arena. Kick-off is 3pm.
