Alfreton Town finished their Easter double-header empty handed after a gallant, battling display against title-chasing Grimsby Town ended in a 2-0 defeat in front of 3,327 at the Impact Arena on Easter Monday.
There was little to choose between the sides in the first half and it took a fortunate deflection by Josh Gowling who diverted a Jack Mackreth shot past Tom Flynn on 69 minutes to put the visitors in front.
After that Karl Hawley went twice for the Reds, his second effort unluckily coming back off the underside of the bar before the visitors doubled their lead with three minutes left, Craig Clay's deep cross from the right being headed home by Lenell John-Lewis at the far post.
Allied to results elsewhere, Alfreton remain six points clear of the relegation places with three games to go, nearest challengers Welling United having a game in hand.
