ALFRETON Town's FA Cup hopes were extinguished by four first-half goals as classy Carlisle took their chances.
The Reds began the game well and had chances to go in front but once the Cumbrians had the lead on 24 minutes, Nicky Law's side fell away to concede three more goals before half-time.
Lee Miller steered home a right-footed shot from eight yards into the far bottom corner for the Carlisle opener after which some lovely passing moves from the visitors carved out a second goal on 33 as Rory Loy despatched a superb 12-yard overhead kick past a rooted Joe Day to finish a pinpoint McGivern cross.
It became 3-0 on 40 minutes when James Berrett was left with a simple tap in after Day had produced a terrific save to prevent a deflection from Leigh Franks from entering his net. Unfortunately for Day, the ball dropped into the path of Berrett who could not miss and didn't.
Alfreton completely switched off on the stroke of half-time as a Berrett corner from the right picked out Liam Noble who had acres of space as he arrived totally unmarked at the far post and he picked his spot with a downward header to end the scoring.
Alfreton competed far better in the second half and could have reduced the deficit but substitute Chris Senior missed a golden opportunity to finally get his first goal for the club when he smashed a 58th minute penalty against the bar.
Leigh Franks was the Reds' man of the match and the attendance was 1,488 of which 351 were from Carlisle United.
Alfreton return to Blue Square Bet Premier Division action next Saturday when high-flying Gateshead are the visitors to the Impact Arena. Kick-off is 3pm.
