'Halifax shows what we can do' - O'Neill

Reds Boss Russ O'Neill was proud of his players as Alfreton gained a hugely impressive 1-0 win over promotion chasing Halifax Town on Tuesday Night.

After narrowly falling short at Chorley last weekend, the Reds made no mistake in securing a crucial three points in the race for National League North survival. Speaking to Amar Sharma, Russ said:

"Tuesday was an excellent result for us, a real credit to the lads who went out there and gave it everything, it was an impressive result and it showed what we can do against the top sides. We've generally done better against those in the top half and it was another example of it, we handled the game well and made it difficult for them."

"We created some good chances and having Westy back in the side was excellent for us and we have missed him in recent weeks. We came close a few times in the first half and we felt unlucky to go into half time at 0-0. Second half we did excellently, Westy with a great goal but how we dug in afterwards was massive. It's a massive confidence boost for all of us to keep a clean sheet against a very good side and I was pleased with every one of the lads."

Russ was also pleased with new signing Wes Atkinson who slotted into defence for the Reds and aided in obtaining a clean sheet on Tuesday:

"He had a great game and it's been a player we have really needed all season, it's come late on in the season but it's great we can tighten up what has been a leaky defence and start to become difficult to break down. That proved on Tuesday. But what is crucial now, is how we kick on from this, there is still work to do to make sure we are totally safe."

Next for Alfreton is the trip to another promotion chasing side in Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday, Russ was fully aware of the upcoming test but was confident about the Reds approach:

"It's another tough game for us, another side that are right up there and it will be the third game in a row for us against the top five. But we take great heart in our performance on Tuesday and we'll go there and aim to defend well and take our chances when they come. It's important for us to kick on, it's a difficult game to try and build momentum but confidence is key for us and we will be up for the challenge and we will aim to take something from the game."
