Alfreton Town were left with an impossible task after Tom Allan and Bradley Wood were harshly dismissed in the opening 25 minutes of their FA Cup Third Qualifying Round tie at Stourbridge on Saturday.

Referee Scott Simpson could easily have brandished yellow for both offences, but decided that Allan had prevented a goal-scoring opportunity by holding back Jordan Archer, all of 30 yards from goal and well towards the right flank with just 19 minutes elapsed.

Then six minutes later Bradley Wood clearly played the ball when tackling Aaron Forde on the edge of the area, but was sent off as the official deemed he was the last line of defence and had impeded the Stourbridge player.

Wood's departure dealt a double blow to the Reds when the free-kick was fired home by Tom Tonks to give the hosts an undeserved lead, the daunting prospect of playing the remaining 65 minutes with just nine men proving to be too difficult a task.

However two chances were carved out after Stourbridge skipper Paul McCone had grazed the bar with a header, Craig Westcarr's volley rebounding off Leon Broadhurst to safety in the 35th minute, then Westcarr was only just off target from the edge of the area.

The second half began with a dipping shot from distance by Aris Christophorou that went close before Cieron Keane wasted a free-kick by blasting high over the stand from a prime position.

Unfortunately it was a corner that Alfreton's already stretched defence failed to deal with in the 58th minute, allowing Josh Green to convert from close range to double Stourbridge's advantage, but six minutes later the Reds were literally handed a life-line when Darryl Westlake handled under pressure from Andre Johnson and Westcarr slotted home the ensuing penalty, sending home keeper Matt Gould the wrong way.

For a few minutes the momentum was with Alfreton's depleted battlers, but Chris Sharp's curling effort from wide left just evaded the back post, while Johnson just failed to reach a pass from Ryan Jennings, but another corner led to the final goal of the tie with Broadhurst exploiting the inevitable space with a near post header two minutes from time.
