Seven confirmed as Reds secure Springthorpe

Friday Jun 16, 2017

Alfreton Town are delighted to announce the signing of goal keeper Mason Springthorpe from Southport.

Mason has penned a one year deal with the Reds.

Springthorpe started in Shrewsbury Town’s youth system and in February 2011 secured a £125,000 move to Everton. He was included in the Toffees matchday squad in March 2013, Everton defeating Reading 2-1 at Goodison Park.

Further unused substitute appearances followed against Wigan in the FA Cup and Manchester City in the league. In January 2014, Mason was loaned to Woking for a month and made his debut the following day as Woking were beaten by Chester. His second appearance came in a 2-2 draw with Lincoln City five days later.

In May 2014, Springthorpe, who had been a regular for Everton's Under-21 team, was released by manager Roberto Martínez. In August, he returned to his native Shropshire, signing for Ellesmere Rangers. In January 2015 Mason signed for League One Fleetwood Town but just made one appearance. Moves to Telford United and then Northwich Victoria on loan followed before a permanent switch to Northwich was completed.

Mason then moved to Southport and made just two appearances.

John McDermott spoke to Amar Sharma after confirming his seventh signing:

“We’ve signed Mason from Southport and he is an excellent shot stopper, he has a great presence, he’s tall, strong and vocal. He has played a various clubs and is well travelled so I’m very happy to have signed him.”

“In my eyes a goalkeeper is just as important as a striker and he is another big signing for us, he will do very well and our squad is coming together very nicely and very strongly. He is my number one and that’s seven confirmed from us so far, it’s very exciting for us and our preparations continue.”
