Report: Brough winner seals first win of pre season

Saturday Jul 6, 2019

Alfreton Town 2-1 Walsall

Morgan Brough's audacious 88th minute back-heel goal sealed a first win for the Reds against League Two Walsall at the Impact Arena on Saturday.

Brough latched onto a loose ball in the box before his trickery took him past the on-rushing goalkeeper before he checked back and converted the ball into the far corner via a back-heel which decieved the man on the line. It was a fantastic moment for young Morgan and capped off a first win for Alfreton of the pre season campaign.

Walsall opened the scoring in the first half after a dominant opening nine minutes from the visitors which saw them retain posession well, the opener came after six minutes when Adebayo headed into the far corner at the far post after a right wing cross.

This came after good pressure from the Reds minutes prior which saw Dale Whitham on his debut narrowly miss connection with a Bobby Johnson corner. It should have been two on 25 minutes when Adebayo's cross from the right found the unmarked Gordan who could only head over the bar from a few yards.

We equalised after 38 minutes when good skill from Johnson saw the ball fall for David Lynch who in turn fed Josh Clackstone on the right side of the box and the full back fired into the far corner.

A full 11 changes came from Walsall with the second half side evidently full of young prospects, with three for Alfreton which saw Jack Atkinson, Danny East and Danny Clarke replacing Tom Nicholson, Dec Bacon and Dale Whitham.

The second half was totally dominant from the Reds as they started on the front foot early, Johnson had a shot blocked before Shane Killock powered a header wide unmarked. Atkinson was called into action after 57 minutes saving well to intercept a Walsall trialist's dangerous run in the box.

Danny East then headed over in similar fashion to the Walsall chance in the first half, Johnson came close with a curler which went just wide from 20 yards. Morgan Brough was introduced after 63 and his energy and work rate was evident as he hassled the back-line throughout.

Several trialists and Harvey Grice were introduced for us and they all combined well as the attacking play was fluid throughout the second half. Grice nearly gave us the lead heading the ball wide at the far post from a trialist's cross. With 85 gone, the ball didn't seem to be going into the net as a trialist saw his shot blocked at the near post, Brough couldn't convert the rebound before Grice's effort was cleared off the line.

But with 88 gone, Morgan Brough broke free after an attempted Walsall clearance was blocked, Brough salomed past the keeper before improvising with a back-heel finish to stump the man on the line as the ball went into the bottom corner.

It was a fitting finish to the game with our young academy product grabbing the winner and another solid all round performance. The Reds host Mansfield Town on Saturday in the next fixture of pre season.
