Report: Altrincham 3-1 Alfreton Town

Monday Oct 15, 2018

Read our report from Saturday as three first half goals sealed the points for the hosts

Three first half goals from Owen Dale, Max Harrop and Jordan Hulme condemned the Reds to a fourth league defeat in a row as a nightmare first half proved decisive at the J Davidson Stadium on Saturday.

Billy Heath made a few changes as Tom Platt and new signing Craig Hobson started.

But the game got off to the worst possible start after three minutes when Owen Dale found himself in space at the far post and converted a right wing cross into the bottom corner.

The Reds looked to respond but Altrincham's counter attack was deadly and Sam Ramsbottom was forced into a smart stop to deny Jordan Hulme.

After nine minutes, it was 2-0. A skillful turn from Max Harrop in the box left us exposed yet again and he finished well into the far corner across Ramsbottom.

Alfreton were struggling to settle into the contest and looked visibly blown away by the two early goals, Richard Peniket nearly pounced on a loose ball but the offside flag went up.

Moments later a smart run by Peniket in the box saw him past two challenges and win a corner, Craig Hobson connected with the resulting corner but could only head the ball behind him and out for a throw.

The Reds looked to have stemmed the tide after controlling the ball for a good five minute period but after 24 minutes, Alty extended the lead to three.

Another attack resulted in way-ward defending and Hulme was left free on the left side and he fired high into the net past Ramsbottom in the box.

The chances continued for the hosts, Harrop's free kick was blocked, before another strike from range was saved easily by Ramsbottom.

Alfreton's response was sloppy and appeared jaded as the first half came to a conclusion, Jordan Sinnott fired way over from a free kick, several corners were won but Altrincham cleared the danger.

The second half was better from the Reds who had to chase the contest, Sinnott's free kick in a good area was blocked before Tom Platt's follow up was also blocked.

Platt had another effort which went over before Peniket did grab one back on the hour mark. A strong run on the right side saw him hold off a challenge in the box and he finished clinically into the far corner to give Alfreton a glimmer of hope.

Josh Wilde's cross on 65 minutes just needed a connection but eluded the Reds players in the box, late corners came but all were cleared.

James Poole tested Ramsbottom at the other end with the Reds goalie producing another good save.

However it wasn't to be for the Reds, with the first half display letting us down and proving crucial. Another big game comes next with the visit of St Neots Town in the FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round on Saturday, kick off is 3pm.
