Defender and striker join to help bolster squad

Alfreton Town are pleased to confirm the signing of defender Ben Clappison from York City and striker Marcus Day from Harrogate Town.

Ben joins the Reds for the remainder of the season and Marcus arrives on a month’s loan.

Clappison came through the Hull City academy and joined at the age of eight, he progressed through the club’s academy to become a professional at the KC Stadium, having been offered his first professional contract at the age of just 15.

In 2013, Clappison helped Hull City to reach the Quarter-Finals of the FA Youth Cup, where they faced Liverpool – the furthest any Hull City side had ever reached in the competition in the club’s history. A loan spell followed at then Conference North outfit Histon in March 2014, where Ben impressed in the Stutes’ defence, making six appearances, before signing his second professional contract with Hull City in the summer of 2014.

After a brief loan spell with FC Halifax Town in November 2015, where he made his senior debut, he returned to the KC Stadium and helped Hull City to reach the under-21 Premier League Cup final in March 2016.

A move to York followed last season on a two year deal where Clappison made ten appearances. Ben was then loaned to Boston, where he made four appearances.

Following loan spells at sides Wetherby Athletic and Harrogate Railway, young striker Marcus Day made his breakthrough into the Harrogate first team during the 2016/17 season.

A first start of the season arrived at AFC Fylde, where Day impressed enough to remain in the plans for Harrogate's next game against Kidderminster, and the Manager’s trust was rewarded with a Man of the Match performance.

Alongside a loan spell at Ossett Town, Day went on to make 19 appearances during the season.

Reds boss John McDermott on both signings:

“Both players are excellent additions for us during a tough portion of the season. We have a few injuries within the squad so it’s good depth for us to have.”

“I know both very well, Ben is a strong centre back and was familiar with him when he was at Hull. I kept my eye on him and from his time at York he has good grounding already. It’s important for us to bring in players with experience.”

“It’s good cover for us to have, Ben is aggressive, a good passer and reader of the game. He has been full time so fitness will be good for him. It gives him a chance to show what he can do as well, gives us depth and freshness."

“Marcus is a great addition for us also; he gets goals and is a good finisher. His work rate is especially important for us; he’s a non-stop runner, always gives 100% effort and will stretch teams. He works the back four and never gives up.”

“It’s been an element for us we have needed, we have goals in the team but not enough at times, we need a player like Marcus who will stretch things for us and obviously get goals. He will give us pace and hunger up front. Thanks to Harrogate for being excellent throughout the process, we are excited to get going with both lads who aim to make us stronger.”
