Bill Draper takes us through our FA Cup First Round history

As we prepare to take on Fleetwood Town on Sunday, Bill Draper takes us through our previous FA Cup First Round appearances as Sunday marks our ninth venture into the First Round.

Here is a summary of each success:-

1969/70 - [ATFC in Midland League - manager Jack Detchon] [Sutton Town, Rawmarsh Welfare, Wombwell Sports and Goole Town beaten in the Qualifiers] [ATFC would have been away to Barnsley in the Second Round].

First appearance and the most memorable, as it took Barrow [then bottom of the Third Division - equivalent of today's League One] three replays and seven hours to knock us out - a record equalled by Welling v. Reading some years later, but can never be bettered - the longest it had ever taken a League club to knock out a non-League club, and all four matches with Barrow plus a standing record 8-0 away League win at Warley were played within the space of nine days from 15th - 24th November 1969.

After the legendary John Harrison had unthinkably missed a penalty Dick Bate equalised for the Reds at home, then two days later at Barrow we drew 0-0 after extra-time - on to Thursday at Saltergate, Chesterfield and a 2-2 draw after extra-time with Ken Ford and Alan Woodward [penalty] the scorers - the final game at Preston's Deepdale was a step too far and we lost 0-2 with two late goals.

1973/74 - [Midland League - manager Maurice Firth] [Burton Albion, Bilston Town, Worksop Town and Buxton beaten in Qualifiers] [ATFC would have been away to Grimsby Town in the Second Round].

Came up against Blyth Spartans, then high-flyers in the Northern League - drew 0-0 at home then had to replay on a frost-bound Croft Park on the following Wednesday lunch-time [Prime Minister Edward Heath's power strike problems meant that floodlights could not be used] where we lost 1-2 after Peter Ford had given us the lead with a shot that was remarkably like watching a Curling event as the ball slid some 20 yards into the net with defenders slipping and skidding on the icy surface.

2004/05 - [Conference North - David Lloyd] [Matlock Town, Cammell Laird and Worksop Town beaten in Qualifiers].

Met Football League side Macclesfield Town - drew 1-1 at home thanks to a last gasp Mark Sale equaliser - lost 0-2 at Moss Rose after Peter Duffield had a goal disallowed that Sky Sports News dissected and proved was not off-side.

2008/09 - [Conference North - Nicky Law] [Shepshed Dynamo, Ilkeston Town and Retford United beaten in Qualifiers] [Went on to lose 0-4 at fog-bound League One leaders Scunthorpe United in Second Round].

Entertained Bury Town from Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk, beating them 4-2 at home with goals from Martin McIntosh, Leo Fortune-West, Josh Law [pen] and Paul Clayton to reach Second Round for first time ever.

2011/12 - [Conference National - Nicky Law] [Lincoln City beaten in only Qualifier after a replay at Sincil Bank - this was the first time that Lincoln had been beaten in an FA Cup Qualifier for 85 years - since an earlier Alfreton Town had won 1-0 in 1926]

Soundly beaten by League Two outfit Carlisle at home 0-4 - a game highlighted on "Match of the Day" when Chris Senior struck a Reds' penalty so hard it rebounded off the crossbar beyond the half-way line].

2012/13 - [Conference National - Nicky Law] [Gateshead beaten in only Qualifier] [went on to lose 2-4 in live TV home game with Leyton Orient in Second Round].

Beat fellow Conference side Wrexham 4-2 away with goals from Paul Clayton, Dan Bradley [pen] and Ben Tomlinson [2].

2013/14 - [Conference National - Nicky Law] [North Ferriby United beaten in only Qualifier]

Away to Wrexham again, but this time lost 1-3 with Jake Speight [pen] the scorer.

2016/17 - [Conference North - Nicky Law] [AFC Fylde, King's Lynn and Gateshead beaten in Qualifiers]. [Would have been away to Plymouth Argyle in Second Round].

Drew 1-1 at home to League Two side Newport County with Terry Kennedy equalising - only lost 1-4 at Rodney Parade in extra-time after Adam Priestley had given us the lead]

2018/19 - [Conference North - Billy Heath] [Sutton Coldfield Town, Mickleover Sports and St. Neots Town beaten in Qualifiers].
