Macca: 'We've had a tough start but we'll get there'

Monday Aug 14, 2017

Reds Boss John McDermott gives his thoughts after the 4-1 defeat to Darlington on Saturday and previews the visit of North Ferriby United tomorrow night.

Alfreton took the lead inside 30 seconds at Darlington before conceding a quick fire equaliser, two further goals came in the second half as a positive start ended in a disappointing result for the Reds.

John spoke to Amar Sharma:

"I felt we looked good on Saturday, we looked sharp, fresh and threatening in the early stages. I got the reaction I wanted in terms of how we played and we made a great start."

"We pressed them well to start and forced the mistake, Westy has a good strike saved and Sharpy is on hand to put it in. It was excellent from our point a view but then we just went into self destruction, we tried to clear the ball and it's our mistake. It's avoidable."

"We can't help them beat us, we lacked concentration at vital times, the second goal we didnt stay with our runner. Sharpy then goes off injured and it was a blow for us. We still maintained our possession but we didn't do enough to hurt them. We had to do a lot of defending as you'd expect but they were too fast, got through us too quickly' it was a tough second half."

The Reds missed numerous chances throughout the game but Macca recognised the quality of Darlington:

"Dizza had a chance second half, we missed the follow up and we had other chances in the second period we just couldn't take them. We had chances to clear the ball when they came forward but we gave them chances and you can't afford to do that against a quality side."

"They are a good team, they did much better than us, they played better, they looked dangerous. We have 18 new players, training once a week, it's going to take time, we look too open in certain games and we need to work on that."

North Ferriby United visit the Impact tomorrow evening and Macca hinted at a few changes:

"They will be another tough team, they came down last year and we need to make sure we get back to being solid again. We might change the personel; but it's a long season. We are three games in and we need to be realistic, it will take time with the players we have brought in, we've had a tough start but we will get there."

Alfreton Town v North Ferriby United kicks off at 7.45pm tomorrow night.
