Macca: 'We need to go there and believe we can get a result'

Thursday Sep 28, 2017

Alfreton Town manager John McDermott looks back at the Reds 2-1 defeat to Spennymoor Town on Saturday and previews the resumption of FA Cup duty at Stourbridge on Saturday.

The Reds lost their unbeaten run of eight games in all competitions on Saturday after falling 1-0 down mid-way through the first half. It was two late on in the second half before a stoppage time Tom Allan header gave us hope. However a 2-1 defeat settled the contest.

Macca spoke with Amar:

"Saturday was an ok performance, it wasn't awful and it wasn't brilliant, it was 50/50. I felt we had an average display, we had one or two that were below par in the game and to be honest the game was flat."

"They had chances and so did we but we never looked like scoring until we went direct and stuck Tom Allan up top, then we looked dangerous. I thought the pitch didn't help, it was sticky and again we had to adapt the style to that. You could see that both teams wanted to play but for us the result was like the Southport game."

On the Reds tempo:

"It was a slow tempo, we cancelled each other out for large periods in the game but again small mistakes cost us. In this league the smallest mistake can lead to a massive chance and ultimately a goal. People not being alert in crucial moments, we were not sharp enough and it felt like we had workmen like performances at times."

"I felt our teamwork was good up until that game, it didn't feel like our performance of recent weeks. There were more individual performances and we lacked a team effort in the game which we have had in past games."

"But we are only a point off the play-offs despite the set back on Saturday and we have tough games coming, we have to play how we have been of late and if it's anything less we will get punished. We need to up our performances again."

On Stourbridge in the FA Cup Third Qualifying Round on Saturday:

"It will be a tough fixture, it always is, it's the FA Cup, no game is easy and we wont be taking it lightly. The players know there is more to give and they have learnt from mistakes in the last game, Rushden took us to a replay and that was a situation we didn't want but we dealt with in the end."

"The lads know they have to be fully on it, they know this is a tougher test. There's nothing between the leagues and they are doing well in the league below. It's a tough away game and we have to make sure we are 100%, they are a good side and we need to go there and have belief we can get a result. We have to peform and we need to want it more, it's just as important to us as it is to them."

Stourbridge v Alfreton kicks off at 3pm on Saturday.
