Macca: 'The lads were brilliant'

Thursday Aug 31, 2017

Reds Boss John McDermott gives his thoughts on the 4-0 win over Curzon Ashton on Bank Holiday Monday and looks ahead to the trip to Nuneaton Town on Saturday.

The Reds romped to a 4-0 win on Monday, scoring four stunning goals including three tremendous strikes from Adam Smith, Tom Platt and Brendon Daniels; Craig Westcarr also finding the net with a powerful header. It capped off a great performance from Macca's men with creativity and confidence in abundance.

John spoke to Amar Sharma:

"It was a very good performance, the lads worked really hard. We was running on empty against Kidderminster and we put in a good performance there without getting anything. But we moved the ball well against Curzon and I mentioned to the lads that I wanted us to pass it more and get on it more."

"There has been times where we have been too direct and moved it too early and I said to them before the Curzon match to get on the ball more, be confident from throw ins, instead of humping it down the line; get on the ball and move it. The lads did it, we drew people out, I wanted our wingers to get on the ball quicker and easier and our build up was so much better."

The Reds created plenty of chances once again and Macca was pleased with the creativity:

"I felt we could have been 3-0 up at half time and if I had to criticse anything it would have been our ruthlessness in the box. But you say to your forwards keep working hard and you'll get a chance and that's exactly what we did. I felt Smithy was tremendous, he looked very dangerous and he gave us a breather at times. He carries the ball well, lets people get up to play in and around the box and he put the ball on a six pence for Westy to get the second goal."

Macca was also pleased with the effort from the squad as a whole:

"I was pleased for Westy to get his goal, he's worked hard during pre season and so far this campaign. All the subs who came on for us made an impact too, I said to Brody welcome to the club; he had a couple of shots, he looked busy and was a fox in the box."

"Tom Platt, I knew what he can do, he's scored a wonder goal and came close at Kidderminster on last weekend."

"All four goals were outstanding from us. Brendon gets his goal and he was quiet in the game but thats what he does and it's a shame the camera man wasn't here to have got the goals on film! But we were brilliant today, the whole team put a shift in and it was excellent."

The Reds travel to Nuneaton this Saturday looking to register back to back wins for the first time this season:

"We head ot Nuneaton next and anyone can beat anyone in this league. I've said to the players that we are still on three and a half gears and when we hit five, people will say what a team we are because we are. I know what they can do and it's just about us getting better at what we do now."

"We can't take anthing for granted, Nuneaton are a good side and as are the two sides we face after; Leamington and Gainsborough. We have to keep moving the ball well and how we have done. I can see changes in our training, every one is enjoying themselves. We entertained and winning games gives us confidence. But it's on to the next one now and we need to build on it."

Nuneaton Town v Alfreton Town kicks off at 3pm on Saturday.
