Macca: 'I'm very happy with the point'

Monday Sep 4, 2017

Reds Boss John McDermott reflects on Alfreton's 2-2 draw at Nuneaton Town on Saturday and looks ahead to the trip to Leamington tomorrow evening.

The Reds came from a goal down to equalise through Chris Sharp's strike before Craig Westcarr netted the Reds in front from the penalty spot. However the hosts clawed the game back as Alfreton picked up their first away point of the season.

Macca spoke to Amar Sharma:

"I was happy with the point to be honest, before the game we wanted to win it obviously and we started really sloppy and slow. We said before the game that we wanted to start with lots of concentration and make sure we were switched on."

"The first goal, it's a short corner, and the build up to it is poor and they end up scoring from it. That gives us a reaction and we score a good goal, good movement and after that I felt they were there for the taking. We should have kicked on at that moment but we didn't."

"But we were happy to scrap around and create bits and bobs and they got back into the game. Overall there was chances for both sides and if I was their manager I'd be disappointed we'd had not won comfortably."

Despite the home side creating plenty of chances, Macca knew it was the end result that counted:

"Yeah despite the amount of chances they had, we have come here, scored two goals and got a point at a difficult place. They are a hard-working side, a young team with good energy. Tom Allan had a chance, which on another day that goes in."

"Sometimes away from home you'e got to be ugly and it was a scrappy performance, it was end to end and no team really dominated the midfield and up front they had good movement and looked dangerous with the balls over the top."

"It was a hot day and it was easy for me in the dugout with a drink! It's been a tough start and this was another tough trip for us and only time will tell if it was a good point or not."

The Reds were leading the game after Craig Westcarr's 53rd minute penalty before Nuneaton pulled the scores level again, however Macca wasn't concerned as the Reds work on their away form:

"It's not concerning for me, we lead at Darlington, Kidderminster and we've lead here as well; we've been playing against two full time teams away from home and sometimes fitness will come into it and it's a massive part towards the end of games. Tiredness is a factor and we had been doing a lot of running today."

"It wasn't a pitch where you could get it down and move it, it was very sticky, very thick, very long. But overall I'm very happy with the point, happier then Tommy (Nuneaton Town manager) will be."

On Cieron Keane's debut:

"He gave us a spark, we were looking for an impact from the subs and he came on and gave us energy up and down. He likes to play, tested the keeper and got balls in the box. Thats what he wants to do, we need performances and I cant have people getting carried, in terms of work rate, in the team."

The Reds travel to Leamington on Tuesday evening, Macca was expecting another tough contest:

"Anyone can beat anyone in this league and it's all about applying yourself. Leamington will be a good team, no side in this league is a bad team. I've seen them during pre season and they've got players that can hurt us."

We have to be on it, it will be a tricky game on their turf and until we get into the top half we can be a threat and teams will fear us, but while we are still mid table, bottom sides can see it as a winnable match. We said after the game against Nuneaton where do we want to be, if we want to be higher then we needed to have come here and do more but our aim as it always is to win and we move onto Leamington now."

Leamington v Alfreton kicks off at 7.45pm tomorrow evening.
