FA Trophy: Alfreton Town 0-2 Altrincham

Tuesday Nov 28, 2017

Read our report from Saturday's poor FA Trophy exit at the hands of Evo-Stik NPL leaders Altrincham.

Two early goals put paid to Alfreton Town's hopes of progress in the F.A.Trophy when Northern Premier League leaders Altrincham visited the lmpact Arena on Saturday.

Altrincham are enjoying something of a renaissance after successive relegations, putting the Reds on the back foot from the start with former Alfreton winger John Johnston causing numerous problems.

In fact it was Johnston who set up the opening goal in the eighth minute after Jordan Hulme had sent him down the right, his delivery turned into his own net by Marcus Marshall.

And eight minutes further on the Robins had doubled their lead through a soft penalty decision after Max Harrop's cross had struck Marshall on the arm, with Johnston converting from the spot.

There was a good save by Altrincham keeper Antony Thompson from a deflected 15th minute free-kick from Brendon Daniels, then a long range effort by Tom Allan was parried by Thompson.

Kegan Everington was next to take a pot shot at goal for the Reds, but he was also denied by Thompson on 29 minutes, then a sharp shot from Johnston needed a positive reaction from Chris Elliott.

Craig Westcarr can certainly count himself unfortunate to see his shot rebound off the upright from a Ryan Jennings throw with 20 minutes remaining, with Jennings also seeing two rasping drives blocked either side of that.

However chances were generally few and far between for Alfreton, with Tom Allan twice heading wide at the back post from respective deliveries by Daniels and Westcarr either side of half-time, whilst later in the game Westcarr had a decent header repelled by Thompson.

It was Johnston who stole the show though and should have scored at least three himself, but Chris Elliott in the Reds goal presented one obstacle that the winger could not readily overcome.
