Billy Priestley moves to Southport

Wednesday Dec 13, 2017

Alfreton Town can confirm that defender Billy Priestley has today moved to Southport for an undisclosed fee.

Billy penned a two year deal with the Reds in the summer and was the 11th arrival at the Impact Arena under John McDermott.

Priestley started his career at Accrington Stanley before moving to Colne FC at the age of 18. The centre-back moved to Barnoldswick Town, and then made the switch to Ramsbottom United in 2013.

A move to Bradford Park Avenue followed in 2014 on a two year deal. Priestley made 61 appearances in just under two years at the club, scoring three goals; before making the move to Salford in March 2016. He made nine appearances before the end of the 2015-16 season with the Ammies, scoring twice.

The 2016-17 campaign saw Billy make 41 appearances, scoring three goals. Billy made 15 appearances for the Reds this season, scoring two goals.

Reds Boss John McDermott on Billy Priestley’s move to Southport:

“We brought Billy here on a two year deal and he has had a difficult start to the season, he’s been injured several times and it’s been stop start for Billy.”

“There’s no doubt Billy is a very good player but in recent weeks and the last month or so, Tom and Shielsy have come in and done really well. Billy has slipped down the order since he got injured and Tom and Shielsy would be picked as the two main centre backs.”

“If Billy was playing every week, doing well, then it would have been a harder decision for us. But he hasn’t been playing, so it helps us having a fee in for a player who hasn’t played many games. Southport came with a fee and it was ideal for us to take that offer.”

The Boss stressed that Priestley’s departure was purely beneficial for the club:

“This is the nature of football and no decision here is made without thorough thought. Billy going, yes it’s hard for us; he’s been a great performer whilst he has been with us and a sturdy defender to have. He’s chipped in with a few goals but it now allows us to strengthen other areas.”

“All parties were considered, unfortunately it was a no brainer for Billy, it moves him closer to home and for us it was money into the club which can be used for other areas. There is no concern; it was a decision that we had to make, we had to act and it benefits us as a club.”

“I want to thank Billy for his attitude and professionalism on and off the pitch. He was so well liked by the fans and everyone at the club. He goes with my blessing and I wish him all the best in his career.”

All at ATFC wish Billy Priestley all the best in his career and thank him for his contribution to the Reds.
