Alfreton Town v Blyth Spartans

Alfreton Town v Blyth Spartans

Thursday Aug 3, 2017

This coming Saturday (the 5th of August) sees the beginning of our Vanarama National League North campaign, when Blyth Spartans visit the Impact Arena for a 3 pm kick-off.

Blyth were promoted last year as Champions of the Evostik Northern Premier, Premier Division. They amassed 101 points from their 46 games only losing seven times, scoring 114 goals in the process.

They are managed by Alun Armstrong formerly a player at Middlesbrough, notable players being Jarrett Rivers, Dan Maguire and the long serving Robbie Dale who to date has made 552 appearances for the club, scoring 184 goals. Top scoer last season was Dan Maguire who found the net 37 times.

An exciting game is in prospect.

Bill Draper informs us of a memorable  past meeting :

We hosted them in the First Round Proper of the FA Cup in 1973, when they were a prominant Northern League side. We drew 0-0 at home in a rough and tumble encounter and, because of PM Edward Heath's ban on the use of floodlights during the power strikes, we were forced to replay on a Wednesday afternoon.

The team stayed overnight at the Esplanade, Whitley Bay and with manager Maurace Firth unable to get time off work, former boss Joe Hooley returned for one game.

These days the match would not have taken place, but it went ahead on a frozen, snow covered pitch, Blyth winning 2-1, going on to play Grimsby Town in the next round.

Peter Ford had given the Reds an early goal that would have been more suited to curling, his shot from 25 yards slithering along the ice with defenders unable to halt it's slow-motion progress.

There were just six Alfreton fans, including Bill himself of course, in a crowd of 1500.

Admission prices are : Adults £14 Concessions £10
