Alfreton Town 4-1 Gainsborough Trinity

Alfreton Town 4-1 Gainsborough Trinity

Monday Sep 11, 2017

Alfreton Town stormed to a 4-0 lead within 25 minutes against Gainsborough Trinity at the lmpact Arena on Saturday, enabling them to climb to eighth spot in the National League North after gaining ten points from their last four outings.

Poor Trinity just could not comprehend what had hit them, despite having conceded the same number of goals on their two previous visits, and ironically only knuckled down to compete once defender Tom Davie had been dismissed for a reckless tackle on Ryan Jennings in the 26th minute.

Tom Platt, who had won the previous game for the Reds at Leamington with a last gasp goal, opened the floodgates in the eighth minute when he was on hand to guide Brendon Daniels' cross over the line from three yards, after Ricky German had linked with Craig Westcarr ?on approach.

Just four minutes later Westcarr was in the right place to divert a Daniels free-kick past visiting keeper Henrich Ravas, then in the 17th minute another Daniels free-kick picked out German, the on-loan striker from Chesterfield FC making his first start for the Reds, who swivelled to plant the ball neatly past Ravas.

The scoring was completed when Daniels fittingly scored in style, directly from yet another free-kick to round off a superb personal performance, but seconds later Davie received his marching orders and the whole dynamic of the game changed with Alfreton no longer able to carve their way through with the ease that they had, despite the man advantage.

Daniels had a shot blocked after taking a return pass from Westcarr, then Jennings saw a diving header saved from a Cieron Keane cross, before German had a strong angled drive beaten away by Ravas in first half stoppage time.

The visitors had precious little opportunity to push forward, but Craig King did find space to send a driven cross inches wide of the back post. Daniels emulated that move with a cross that only just proved too strong for Jennings to reach, then on 59 minutes Bradley Wells went close to reducing the deficit from a King free-kick.

Westcarr was denied by the keeper's instinctive save as he ran on to Craig Disley's through-ball, the latter then seeing his shot blocked from the ensuing corner. Jennings headed over from Keane's 69th minute delivery, then a Bradley Wood thunderbolt from distance just avoided troubling Ravas.

Gainsborough undoubtedly deserved their consolation goal, which was only the second conceded at home by the Reds in five games this season, Wells following up after Chris Elliott had brilliantly parried an angled rasper from John Evans.
