Alfreton Town 2-3 Boston United

Alfreton Town 2-3 Boston United

Sunday Dec 24, 2017

Read our report as the Reds succumbed to a sixth league defeat in seven games on Saturday

Alfreton Town managed to claw back a two-goal deficit, only to lose 2-3, when they entertained Boston United on Saturday, which was their fifth straight home league defeat in this troublesome National League North season.

Just 17 seconds had ticked by when Boston were awarded the first of two penalties in the opening 13 minutes, both converted with aplomb by Ashley Hemmings, but it was only in the second half that the Reds really dug deep to fight back and restore parity Alex Cover was the first culprit, with Tom Allan conceding the second penalty, both for fouls on Reece Thompson, with Tom Platt's header over from Brendon Daniels' 16th minute corner the only positive response in a pretty dismal first half for the Reds.

In fact former Alfreton midfielder Andi Thanoj almost put the issue way beyond doubt with an 18th minute free-kick that came back off the post.

Mercifully it was a much different story after the break, thanks in no small part to the introduction of Craig Westcarr, with the Reds pulling a goal back in the 59th minute when debutant Frank Mulhern headed firmly past Boston keeper George Willis from a Cieron Keane cross.

Just four minutes later Westcarr took full advantage of an embarrassing slip by Willis as he tried to field a back-pass, leaving the striker with an empty net to raise the Impact Arena roof.

At that stage it was all Alfreton, but an unfortunate injury to ex-Reds' favourite Brad McGowan broke up play 21 minutes from time, the central defender turning badly as he was dispossessed by Mulhern, although the latter completely wasted his chance with a dreadfully overhit shot.

McGowan received a sympathetic ovation from the home supporters as he was stretchered off, but crucially the impetus that had driven the Reds for those few minutes had evaporated, and Boston were able to conjure up an 80th minute winner when Jordan Keane lashed home off the underside of the crossbar after a Hemmings corner had not been cleared.

The Reds threw everything at the visitors in an attempt to once again draw level, but Willis atoned for his earlier error by brilliantly stopping Mulhern's header right on the line from a Daniels corner in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
