Alfreton Town 2-0 Blyth Spartans

Alfreton Town 2-0 Blyth Spartans

Sunday Aug 6, 2017

The Reds got off to a flying start at the Impact Arena in the new Vanarama National League North campaign with an excellent win over last season's Evo-Stik Northern Premier Champions.

The game began with chances for both sides, Craig Westcarr nearly converting a low cross from Andre Johnson for Alfreton. Despite the string of chances it was a defender who opened the scoring for Alfreton in the 40th minute. Luke Shiels hooking home, as a  Sam Topliss long throw was flicked on.

Blyth piled on the pressure at the beginning of the second half, but the Reds defence held firm. The visitor's wide man Jarrett Rivers proving to be a tricky customer, but his crosses were dealt with well by Alfreton's defence and goalkeeper Elliott, who also did well to smother a shot from Dan Maguire.

Alfreton were always dangerous on the counter and doubled their lead on 65 minutes when influential skipper, Craig Disley won the ball in midfield laying off to Johnson who played the ball into Westcarr, he was driven wide but played in a superb cross for the stooping Johnson to head home.

The Reds held on to their lead well and could have increased it through a good chance for Westcarr.

The game ended on a rather bizarre note. Injured referee James Bell had to leave the field to be replaced by linesman Daniel Jarvis. As no extra official could be found, both managers agreed to play the rest of the game with just one official on the line.
