Alfreton Town 1-2 Nottingham Forest U23's

Sunday Jul 9, 2017

The first Pre-Season Friendly at the Impact Arena took place this past Saturday when Alfreton Town entertained a Forest Under 23 side managed by Jack Lester.

This was the first home game under the new Alfreton Management Team led by John McDermott. Most of the new Reds signings were given a run-out, as were a number of trialists.

On a glorious summer's afternoon, the Reds took an early lead after just four minutes when a handball offence in the Forest area resulted in a penalty, duly converted by Andre Johnson.

Forest responded with Jake Taylor striking the post inside the box before Gerry McDonagh side footed wide after a devlish near post cross. The Reds confidence grew and a second goal was inches away when Johnson struck the bar inside the box on 15 minutes.

The dangerous Johnson again came close, collecting Craig Westcarr's low cross but his effort was blocked a few yards out. Mason Springthorpe was called into action rarely in the first period but punched out Alex Lacovitti's header. Arron Smith then levelled for Forest on 42 minutes with a surging, weaving run from the half way line into the box; he then finished well past Springthorpe.

The second half saw limited openings, Liam Bossin did excellently to deny Johnson's low strike and Bossin produced an even better save to deny Morgan Brough, tipping the youngster's effort wide after a quick counter attack. Brody Robertson was next to come close, firing just over the bar inside the box.

Forest then grabbed the winner on 86 minutes, Arron Smith with his second with a great free kick from 24 yards which curled into the top corner. But the Reds can be happy with a solid display and a game with plenty of chances created by John McDermott's men.

Sheffield Wednesday are the next visitors to the Impact on Tuesday night, 7.30pm kick off.
