Alfreton Town 0-5 Sheffield Wednesday

Alfreton Town 0-5 Sheffield Wednesday

Thursday Jul 13, 2017

The Reds went down 5-0 to a strong Sheffield Wednesday side at the Impact Arena on Tuesday evening in their second home pre-season friendly.

The game was also a testimonial to pay tribute to the long serving careers of former manager Nicky Law and his assistant Russ O'Neill who spent ten years at the helm.

The Owls fielded most of the first team squad as they began their pre-season schedule ahead of the 2017-18 Chamiponship campaign.

The Reds competed well in the early stages, Craig Westcarr fired wide from the edge of the box before the Owls turned up the pressure. Successive corners were cleared as Wednesday dominated the ball throughout the game and switched the play to stretch the Reds. However Alfreton continued to push, Westcarr's cross found a Trialist whose header was saved.

Heroic defending came next, Luke Shiels and Tom Allan both made sensational blocks in the box before the Owls found the opener on 23 minutes. Jordan Rhodes was slid into the box, his first effort blocked before his second attmept found the empty net.

The second came soon after on 25 minutes, a whipped cross from the right side saw Rhodes glance his header into the far corner. Palmer then forced Springthorpe to tip over the bar from close range.

The second half was no different from the first with the Championship club dominant on the ball. The Reds attacking sproadically, Westcarr hit a free kick from 30 yards straight at substitute Dawson, Adam Reach then struck the bar from range.

59 minutes saw Wednesday make it three, a slick passing move opened up Alfreton, Fox squared for a tap in for Nuhiu. It was four on 66 minutes, Reach finding the bottom corner from range.

The Owls then struck the post twice off a set piece, Reach curled the ball onto the far post, Nuhiu's follow up also hit the other post. It was five with three minutes left, Connor O'Grady taking a loose ball well in the box to finish low past Springthorpe.

The crowd swelled by many visiting supporters was an excellent 1,426.
