Alfreton Town 0-2 Chorley

Alfreton Town 0-2 Chorley

Tuesday Oct 10, 2017

The Reds suffered a third straight defeat in all competitions when Chorley visited the Impact on Saturday.

Alfreton Town slipped to 14th place in the Vanarama National League North with Saturday's benign performance against Chorley that ended in a 0-2 defeat at the lmpact Arena.

The Reds started on a positive note, but were stunned by an audacious goal from inside his own half by Nick Haughton in the 11th minute and never seemed to recover their composure.

Haughton had spotted keeper Chris Elliott off his line and executed his opportunity with spectacular precision, but it was a very poor goal for the hosts to concede.

ln the early exchanges a Brendon Daniels free-kick and a low Craig Westcarr drive had been fielded by visiting keeper Matt Urwin, then in the sixth minute Chris Sharp advanced with the ball but opted to fire wide with both Daniels and Westcarr in support.

Haughton missed a relatively easy chance from a Josh O'Keefe through-ball before Chorley squandered another opportunity to double their lead in the 38th minute, when debutant defender Steve Williams had been lured into baulking Marcus Carver, Elliott diving low to his right to save Josh Wilson's penalty kick.

Just 50 seconds after the half-time break Chris Sharp found the net from a Ceiron Keane cross, but his goal was ruled out by a questionable off-side decision, the visitors though going on to carve out several clear cut chances with notable misses by Carver and Wilson.

Wilson also smashed the ball against the back post on 68 minutes and Elliott needed to pull off a lightning reflex save to thwart Jason Walker with 11 minutes remaining.

Alfreton should have drawn level in the 73rd minute when Brody Robertson just failed to make contact in front of goal with another Keane cross and there was also a vital touch by Urwin ten minutes later, paddling away a deep Adam Smith cross as Williams homed in at the back post, but generally there was precious little sparkle from the Reds on a disappointing afternoon that matched the dismal weather.

Haughton completed the scoring five minutes from time after cutting in from the right and lashing the ball home from just inside the area.
