Academy Success

Academy Success

Wednesday May 24, 2017

Alfreton Town's fledgling academy picked up three trophies in the space of five days over last weekend, completing an extremely successful season under the guidance of Jamie Brough, assistant manager Dave McCarthy and coach Liam Hearn.

Their first season was in it's infancy when the young Reds successfully negotiated three rounds of the prestigious FA Youth Cup, beating Ayelsbury Park 3-2 at the Impact Arena, Ashby Ivanhoe 6-1 away and Belper Town 5-4 in a memorable game at Christchurch Meadows before bowing out 2-1 to Dunkirk in the final qualifying round.

That run set the standard and culminated in three trophies, beginning with a 4-0 success over Woollaton and Bramcote to lift the Notts Youth League Cup at Basford United's ground on Thursday evening with goals from Callum Angel (pen), George Layton, Josh Booth and Moziah Solassie.

On Saturday the Notts Youth League title was secured by virtue of a 3-2 win at Lowdham United , backed by a large travelling support. Angel gave the Reds the lead from the spot but they then went 2-1 down fighting back with an own goal equaliser and an excellent headed winner from Morgan Brough that saw the securing of the three points and the title, despite a late goal mouth sramble in the Reds penatly area.

On to Monday and the Central Conference Cup Final at the Academy HQ at Rolls Royce Hucknall against Stamford based Football CV. The Reds fell behind early in the game but some slick football turned the game around with a deft header from Layton and a fine angled drive from Ellis Evans saw Alfreton triumph 2-1.

Evans has been a success story, having broken into the first team squad along with Morgan Brough, coming on as a substitute on April the 8th at FC Halifax Town and then starting for the first time at Tamworth before making his home debut in the 3-3 draw at the Impact Arena in the last game of the season against Nunueaton Town.

An proud Jamie Brough reflected " To finish the season with three trophies in our first season is something that hopefully the club can be proud of. The side is predominantly an under 17's, which makes the achievement even greater.

I'm delighted with how we are progressing both as a team and individually, and i'm excited about the futures some of the boys have.

I would like to thank everyone who supported us throughout- It really has meant a lot to me and the boys and while I thought there would be some interest from supporters, I never expected the level of interest there has been.

Special thanks go to the Chairman and the Board of Directors, who put their faith in me and my team when starting the Academy a year or so ago - hopefully we have done you and the club proud, not only with our results on the pitch but how we have conducted ourselves off the pitch too."
