Preview: Brackley Town v Alfreton Town

Friday Apr 13, 2018

This coming Saturday the Reds make the difficult journey to St James Park to take on Brackley Town in the Vanarama National League North, kick-off 3pm.

With three games left to play, we are in much need of points. After wins for Curzon (2-0 over Gainsborough on Wednesday night) and Telford's 3-2 win over Leamington on Thursday evening; we have slipped to 19th in the table. Just a point seperates us from Tamworth in the relegation zone with the same games played.

The Reds last outing came in a heavy 1-4 home defeat to promotion chasing Spennymoor Town. It was a display that left Reds fans and management angered at the lack of creativity and battle which Alfreton had been showing in previous fixtures. Back to back draws against Nuneaton and Curzon followed by back to back defeats for Spennymoor did leave an opening to capitalise for the Reds but a wonder strike mid-way through the first half saw heads drop again at home.

Nyal Bell pulled a goal back in the second half but Glen Taylor went on to complete his hat-trick with two further finishes towards the end of the game. The defeat left the Reds in desperate form, with just one win in our last ten league games. Another home defeat has now seen us win-less in our last five league outings at home, with our last three points at the Impact coming on the 10th Feburary against Tamworth, 2-1.

Alfreton head on the road unbeaten in the last four away league games (W1, D3). This will be form the Reds will look to build on after performing much better on the road compared to at home. Three points will be essential in what is turning out to be a nervy and gut-wrenching end to the season as we battle to beat the drop.

It will be no easy task on Saturday as third placed Brackley are having a superb season. They currently lie in 3rd place in the league having tasted defeat only five times this season to date, gaining 74 points from their 37 games played. They are five points behind second placed Harrogate Town with a game in hand.

Brackley recorded an impressive 3-0 away win at Spennymoor on Thursday night with goals from Ndlovu, Armson and Byrne. This result was their second on the bounce and the Saints have only tasted defeat once in their last nine league games.

The Saints bode an incredible home record and are currently unbeaten at home this season in the 17 league games they have played at St James Park, this figure rises to 23 games with Brackley's FA Trophy run included. The Reds will be looking to inflict a first league defeat to the Saints at home this season.

Brackley have also reached the final of the FA Trophy, when they will meet National League side Bromley at Wembley in May.

Two former Reds in the Brackley squad are Luke Graham and the popular Theo Streete.

When the Saints visited the Impact Arena back in Septmember, the two sides shared the spoils in an exciting encounter which ended 1-1. Brackley took the lead through Lee Ndlovu after 15 minutes, with our leveller coming just three minutes later, a header by Craig Westcarr from a Brendon Daniels free kick.
