'We still need points' - O'Neill

'We still need points' - O'Neill

Friday Apr 14, 2017

Reds Boss Russ O'Neill insists the Reds need to claim vital points as the season draws to an end.

With four games to go, Alfreton's cushion to the drop zone has been cut from nine points to six after Gainsborough Trinity's 1-0 win over Salford City on Good Friday. However, last weekend's 1-0 defeat at Halifax Town came with many positives for the Reds manager:

"Last weekend was a good performance from us, I felt we set up very well, we defended well throughout and we carried a threat at times against them. I've said all season it's been a fine line between winning and losing for us and last weekend was a fine line once again. We had been disappointed with the run we had been on and we felt we should have taken something from the past set of games."

"The lads came out and expressed themselves and looked confident which is exactly what i wanted them to do. We had six first team players out through injury and we were gutted with the result. We conceded from a set piece and didn't mark the most dangerous player from that set piece and that cost us the game."

"The table doesn't lie as we head into tomorrow, we still need points for ourselves and it's important we approach the game against Darlington right."

Despite the Reds recent form which has seen them lose four league games in a row, Russ emphasised the need for his side to get a strangle-hold on games:

"We have been on a poor run but it's only us that can turn it around, we have another tough game tomorrow and we know that after today's result for Gainsborough they have cut our cushion from nine points to six so its back to us to do what we need to do for ourselves. If we are dominating games we need to take our chances and not be sloppy in front of goal, we need to take advantage of positive moments and momentum."

On the signing of Oli Cox from Swanwick Pentrich Road:

"Yeah we signed the young defender on dual registration, so he can play for us if we need him and he obviously can play for Swanwick Pentrich Road. He has signed on non-contract terms until the end of the season and trained with us this week. We are looking forward to working with him and developing him as a player."

Darlington are the next visitors to the Impact tomorrow with the host's chasing a play-off position although off field circumstances could see Darlo miss out on a play-off place. Russ stressed the need for the Reds to pick up points:

"We have four games left, 12 points left, we still are not out of trouble but it is still in our hands. We need to approach the game tomorrow with physicality and we have been a different team at home then away. Our fans will be important as they always have been and we hope many can get down tomorrow and support us. The lads are raring to go and know a result would be big for us."

"The main thing for us is to stay in this division, we had four years in the Conference Premier, we dropped down and we've been battling all season and the job is to stay up. We do that and it's job done for us. We have three points up for grabs tomorrow against a quality side and i have confidence that we can get all three."
