Alfreton Town slipped to their first defeat from four away games, as their pre-season campaign was brought to a close at Coalville Town on Saturday.
On a parched pitch and a demanding slope the Reds never really knitted as they had in previous outings, the teams ultimately separated by a 50th minute penalty converted by Aaron Hooton after Tom Allan had impeded Alex Troke.
Both sides struggled to produce many clear chances in a game stifled by too many intrusions from referee Matthew Law, the game never living up to expectations and at times tetchy.
Twice in the second half players squared up to each other as tensions boiled over, the outcome in a competitive game surely resulting in the issuing of several cards.
Coalville livewire Jake Woolley volleyed over in the second minute from the edge of the area, then Alfreton were denied a penalty after 14 minutes when Joe lronside was bowled over from a long Niall Heaton throw.
Nick Draper then held a Josh Morrall free-kick before Allan headed over from a Dan Bradley cross on 21 minutes, Morrall then firing over from a good position.
Bradley ran the ball out after a speedy run down the right, then Danny Jenno cleared from Jamie Jackson following Joe Leesley's 40th minute cross.
The Reds almost broke through three minutes before half-time when home keeper Sean Bowles parried a stinging drive from Bradley before smothering the loose ball as lronside homed in, the half ending with Draper's instinctive block from Woolley.
Sam Smith's 67th minute header that sailed over from an Andi Thanoj cross heralded Alfreton's best opportunity of an equaliser, Allan then heading over at the back post from a Thanoj corner eight minutes from time.
Sam Berry then went close from 25 yards, but it was not enough to prevent the Evostick League Division One [South] team from recording a solitary goal victory.
