Alfreton Town played out a commendable draw against a strong Sheffield Wednesday squad at the lmpact Arena on Saturday.

New Owls manager Carlos Carvalhal fielded different line-ups for each half, with the exception of Kieran Lee who was substituted on the hour, whilst Reds' skipper Dan Bradley was the only member of the home team to complete 90 minutes.

A healthy attendance of 1547 was boosted by a sea of blue and white clad Wednesday fans, who were no doubt relieved to see the strength of their team after their Academy side had suffered a world famous 14-0 defeat by the Reds on their previous visit in 2011.

Atdhe Nuhiu's first minute downward header was held by Alfreton keeper Nick Draper, who had been on the losing side against the Reds four years earlier in an FA Cup replay at Lincoln City.

Draper then thwarted Jeremy Helan after a strong run in the 12th minute before Caolan Lavery went close for the visitors.

Sam Jones tried to push the Reds forward with a pass that allowed Joe lronside to tee-up Ryan Wilson, who blazed over from the edge of the area with 25 minutes on the clock, then Lavery wasted another good chance for the Owls with a centrally positioned free-kick.

Bradley's powerful sprint down the right had Wednesday back-pedalling two minutes before the break, but his cross was comfortably held by former Alfreton goalkeeper Cameron Dawson.

Lewis King took over the gloves from Draper for the second half, immediately reacting well to an angled drive from Sergiu Bus that needed parrying before he could gather it safely.

Wednesday though were ahead by the 49th minute following a slick move from the half-way line that culminated in Marco Matias teeing up Bus for a simple conversion from close range.

Jack Hunt then fired over, but on 61 minutes Bradley again powered through to smack the ball against the near post.

The action swung back to the other end four minutes later. when a superb tip over by King prevented Ryan Croasdale from doubling Wednesday's advantage.

Alfreton's persistence was rewarded after 71 minutes when Joe Leesley sent Niall Heaton scampering down the left before the defender unleashed an unstoppable left-foot shot from just inside the area.
