Leading at half-time; should have been 3-0 up by the interval; had to settle for a draw - sounds very much like Alfreton Town's previous outing against Brackley Town, but Tuesday night's game at Whaddon Road produced some good fluent football that at least gives supporters hope.

What probably made matters worse was Gloucester City being reduced to ten men after Spencer Hamilton had been sent off in first half added time for a scything tackle on Dan Bradley.

The Reds were then pegged back after the break and seemed unable to regain the momentum that had led to Tom Allan's 42nd minute goal, his crisp header from eight yards made possible by Bradley's mesmerising cross from the right after an Andi Thanoj corner from the opposite side had flown through the area untouched.

Allan had thought he had scored in the ninth under bizarre circumstances, home keeper Jas Singh hacking a clearance against Joe Leesley with the ball looping up for the Reds' defender to head into an open net, but after a lengthy discussion with his assistant the referee ruled it out.

Gloucester rallied and Matt Duke had to deal with sharp efforts from Mike Symons, Joe Parker and Billy Jones before Leesley and Cliff Moyo tested Singh in response.

Both Thanoj and Leesley had shots charged down ten minutes before the break, then Leesley glanced a header wide from a Thanoj corner before going close with an audacious chip from wide left three minutes after Allan had opened the scoring.

Symons had the ball in the Alfreton net on 56 minutes only to fall foul of the off-side flag, City pegging the Reds back almost incessantly without causing too many problems, until Duke needed to tip over a rasping drive from Harry White in the 82nd minute.

Jones took the resulting corner and Marc Richards headed home from six yards, Alfreton though nearly snatching a late winner when sub John Johnston was sent through by Bradley only to drag his shot wide after cutting in.
