Alfreton Town wound up pre-season at Worksop Parramore on Friday night, where goals from Josh Law and Aaron Webster were not enough to prevent defeat.

Sam Smith had given the hosts a ninth minute lead with a firm near-post header from a Jack Poulton cross, much to the delight of the Northern Counties [East] side led by former Reds' manager Russ Eagle.

It was midway through the first half before Alfreton's pressure began to tell, with Webster flashing a header wide and Dan Bradley forcing keeper Archie Sneath to save from 25 yards, before John McGrath drew another good stop from Sneath.

A drinks break seemed to invigorate the Reds and they were level on 38 minutes when Law drilled home from six yards following a neat back-heel from Kristian Ramsey-Dickson.

Three minutes later Alfreton were ahead when Webster placed the ball calmly into the net from 12 yards after another assist from Ramsey-Dickson.

Two minutes after the break Law's run into the area allowed Martin Devaney to fire hard and low at the far post, but substitute keeper Stephen Hernandez read well and blocked.

Smith fired over twice in quick succession as Parramore refused to lie down, before grabbing his second goal of the game on 63 minutes after Ross Atkins had parried his initial shot.

Barely two minutes later Worksop had regained their lead when Craig Fletcher fired high into the net from 15 yards, and despite an incessant onslaught from that point the Reds were unable to claw their way back into the game.

Parramore defended resolutely, but it took a late great save from Hernandez to deny Law with a superbly struck free-kick that on any other day would have nestled in the back of the net.

One new face paraded by Alfreton was that of Jay McFadzean for the injured Joel Purkiss, following in the footsteps of father John [of whom his appearance and tenacity would have taken some supporters back 20 years] and brother Kyle.
