In their final outing of six official pre-season games, Alfreton Town recorded their first friendly victory as they inflicted a first pre-season defeat on what was almost a full-strength Chesterfield side in a very good work out for both teams at the Impact Arena on Friday night.
Chesterfield held sway in the first half, failing to take any of several chances but as the half wore on, Nicky Law's side got into the game and in the end, the victory was deserved as the Reds put in a very good showing in the second half.
Several trialists again feature for the Reds but it was summer signing Phil Barnes who proved himself with two very good early saves to deny the Blues.
On four minutes he quickly came out of goal to close down Jordan Bowery and snatch the ball away from him then three minutes later Barnes produced a brilliant tip over from an angled drive by the same Chesterfield player.
Marc Richards then shot wide for the visitors on 12 minutes when he should have done better from ten yards.
Alfreton began to get going up front and on 21 minutes Nathan Arnold sent a dipping 20 yarder inches over the top.
The Reds went close again when from an Arnold free kick, Darran Kempson's downward header at the far post was held by Tommy Lee in the blues goal.
Kempson showed his defensive prowess a minute later, producing a superb tackle to foil Bowery at the expense of a corner.
Nathan Arnold curled a shot just over from 15 yards on 43 minutes but he wasn't to be denied and a minute later he put Alfreton in front as he steered in a 12 yard shot to beat the onrushing Tommy Lee.
The visiting keeper prevented Alfreton from doubling their lead four minutes into the second half when he produced a good save at his near post after Arnold had cut in.
Chesterfield hit the woodwork on 54 minutes when a strong drive by Craig Westcarr looped up off connor Franklin and landed on top of the bar.
The second period developed into a very good contest and Alfreton also hit the frame of the goal with Josh Law's free kick smacking the angle of post and bar.
Chesterfield equalised on 65 minutes when a sudden burst of pace from Scott Boden through the middle set up Danny Whittaker and he curled home a fine shot from the edge of the penalty area.
In an end-to-end second half Alfreton got the winner on 73 minutes when a back-pass from Terrell Forbes ended with substitute goalkeeper Richard O'Donnell only hitting his clearance into the path of an Alfreton trialist who promptly despatched the ball from 16 yards.
Kempson produced a brilliant block to prevent a visiting player getting into the penalty area and Chesterfield had one last opportunity to get something from the game in the dying seconds but after substitute Hazell had raced clear, Alfreton's replacement trialist keeper rushed out to thwart him.
