Alfreton Town would have accepted a draw at high-flying Forest Green Rovers before the start of their Blue Square Bet Premier encounter on Saturday.

In the end though, despite having to rely on a late penalty, the Reds really did more than enough to warrant a win and were mainly denied by some heroic saves by home keeper Sam Russell.

Yan Klukowski had given Forest Green a tenth minute lead when he followed up after Jon Stewart's stretching save from Matty Taylor, but the hosts rarely troubled an Alfreton defence that had seen injured skipper Darran Kempson adequately replaced by Adam Quinn.

The closest they came to adding to their tally was in the 21st minute when Leigh Franks had to clear a Jamie Collins header off the line, but gradually Alfreton asserted pressure and Dan Meadows saw his angled header held by Russell two minutes later.

A long central run by Dan Bradley opened up the chance for a Nathan Arnold volley that was parried low down at his near post by Russell on 36 minutes, then at the other end Theo Streete remained calm under pressure to guide James Norwood's awkward cross back to Stewart.

Russell fumbled Franks' long throw four minutes before the interval but was rescued by the alert James Rowe, then Arnold flashed a shot across the face of goal after outwitting home skipper Eddie Oshodi.

Oshodi though excelled in blocking a neat move between Connor Franklin and Arnold that led to Anthony Wilson finding himself in front of goal in the 48th minute, then four minutes later Wilson's strong drive was held by Russell after Bradley had picked out Arnold with a swiftly taken throw-in.

Bradley's well-directed free-kick may well have ended up in the net had it not been for another good interception by Oshodi, who headed behind for a corner, then as Forest Green tried to rally Klukowski's direct run ended with a shot that barely troubled Stewart.

With 20 minutes left on the clock and Rovers hanging on to their slender lead Arnold put a good chance behind with an angled drive from sub Simon Russell's pass, then Anton Brown headed over from close range from another Russell delivery.

Franks was off-balance when his header from a Russell free-kick was cleared at the back post, then Arnold's stinging drive was parried by the keeper before the ball rebounded into his arms off the unwitting Ben Tomlinson.

Franklin then sent Arnold to the by-line before winning a corner off Ed Asafu-Adjaye in the 82nd minute, then almost immediately keeper Russell pulled off another defiant save from Arnold from a Bradley pass, with Wilson then heading over after Franklin had kept the move flowing.

Yet another great save by Russell thwarted Bradley from 25 yards as the home side came under siege, then as added time loomed Oshodi bravely threw himself in front of another Arnold volley from another Bradley pass.

With Rovers still ahead as the game entered the second minute of stoppage time Russell's cross caused mass confusion in the box with the keeper, Oshodi, Tomlinson and Franks all converging on the ball and Devon referee Brett Huxtable spotted a push and pointed to the spot.

It may well have been Russell who had barged into Franks, but whatever the reason Alfreton had been handed a deserved lifeline and Bradley remained the calmest person at the New Lawn to send the keeper the wrong way from the spot.
