Alfreton Town twice came from behind to earn a terrific 3-2 home win over Sky Bet Championship side Rotherham United at the Impact Arena on Tuesday night and maintain their unbeaten status in pre-season.
The Reds competed well throughout and snatched an 88th minute winner against a Millers side in which manager Steve Evans gave a run out to the majority of his first team squad.
A brace of early corners for the visitors saw Richard Wood twice head wide, then after 17 minutes Joe Leesley was just unable to reach an Andi Thanoj throughball when well placed.
Grant Ward, on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, put the visitors ahead on 26 minutes when he bundled home at the far post from a Jeffery Smith cross, but Alfreton hit back and equalised on 40 minutes when Sam Jones despatched an unstoppable 25 yard left-footed strike into the top corner after latching on to a loose ball.
Moments before Ward fired home his second goal of the game on 62 minutes from 12 yards following a swift break to put the Millers in front again, John Johnston had lashed the ball against the post with Dan Bradley extracting a brilliant save from United keeper Adam Collin as Jones returned the loose ball into the area.
Nick Draper read the situation well as Lee Frecklington raced through, then in response Tom Allan sent Johnston to the by-line with Collin blocking his angled drive.
A long range effort from Jones flashed inches wide, then Collin had to tip over a fantastic 30 yarder from Jason Palin, but Alfreton persevered and with 11 minutes to go Johnston swept home a loose ball in the penalty area for 2-2 after a Bradley cross had only been partially cleared.
The Reds kept going right to the end and grabbed the winner with two minutes remaining when Joe Ironside headed home from close range after United keeper Adam Collin had saved from the Alfreton striker's initial header, but it still needed a good save by Draper to thwart Wood.
