Alfreton Town’s inconsistencies reared their head again as they fell to a 2-1 home defeat against a lively and well-drilled Boston United.
Just a week after putting in a spirited, committed display to gain a win at high-flying Harrogate Town, this performance was one of frustration with little cohesion and a slice of determination missing.
Nicky Law’s side conceded a goal in the first minute and never really got going until late in the game by which time they were two goals behind and could only break down a resolute visiting defence once in reply.
In their first home Saturday game for seven weeks, the Reds got off to a disastrous start when they conceded after just 53 seconds.
Jordan Blinco rifled home a loose ball from around eight yards after the hosts had failed to clear a ball in from the left from Dayle Southwell.
In reply, the Reds won a couple of corners and as Boston also failed to clear the second one, Andi Thanoj could not direct hit shot on target.
Alfreton were handed a free kick when Jordan Robertson was felled on the edge of the penalty area on 12 minutes. But, from Joe Leesley’s dead-ball kick, Boston stood firm before conceding another corner.
Boston were dangerous on the counter attack but Dayle Southwell thankfully lost his footing after cutting inside Stefan Galinski.
United keeper Henrich Ravas needed two bites of the cherry to claim the ball when he came for a long ball from the left from Ryan Wilson but the home side then had two let offs.
Grant Roberts saw a deflected shot roll narrowly past the far post on 18 minutes as Alfreton struggled to get going then John Sands pounced on a weak Galinski header from a long throw and saw his powerful close range shot come back off the left-hand post.
Alfreton were badly lacking on cohesion across midfield with two long hopeful through-balls easily fielded by Ravas.
The Reds finally managed to feed John Johnston out wide right but Ravas was quickest to react and snatched the low cross away from the incoming Robertson.
Robertson created a yard of space for a shot on 28 minutes but his low 18 yarder was saved by Ravas who again needed two grabs with Sam Smith closing in on the palmed save.
Boston put together a raid down the right which won them a right-flank corner but it went to waste with an over-hit flag kick going out the other side.
Sands again threatened down the left and after cutting in saw his 16 yard shot deflected for another corner.
Sam Smith was brought down in full flight down Alfreton’s left by United right back Liam Marrs but Thanoj’s free kick bisected everyone in the area and went out for a goal kick.
The first booking of the game went to John Sands on 41 minutes for an over-zealous try for possession as home keeper Matt Duke was just about to collect a through-ball before Boston’s Dayle Southwell spurned a great chance to double his side’s lead when he burst through the middle but fired way over the top.

ohn Johnston got free down Alfreton’s left a couple of minutes into the second half but his low cross lacked conviction and direction and Ravas easily claimed on his front post.
In reply, Southwell got free down the left and crossed for Sands but his header flew straight at Duke,
Southwell was then sent free again and had a powerful angled drive parried well  by Duke for an unproductive corner.
Johnston repeated his run of a few minutes earlier and found a better cross but Ravas again snatched the ball away from the incoming Reds players.
The home side had big shouts for a penalty waived aside when Jordan Robertson appeared to be felled by Carl Piergianni.
The first change of the game came on 55 minutes with Tom Allan replacing John Johnston for the Reds which brought a reshuffle at the back.
As Alfreton continued  to press, a Joe Leesley cross was punched away from the head of Sam Smith by Ravas and from the loose ball Ryan Wilson’s fizzing 22 yard left footed volley flew narrowly over the bar.
However, it was the visitors who struck next and Jordan Blinco  doubled  Boston United’s lead on 61 minutes with a shot from the edge of the penalty area as he finished a cross n from Dylan McEvoy.
Liam Marrs produced a brilliant last ditch challenge deep in the penalty area to deny Sam Jones a shooting chance on 65 minutes then Niall Heaton pounced on a loose ball in midfield to advance and unleash a shot but it failed to trouble anyone except the fans in the Bentley Close end.
Matt Duke produced a fine diving save at the expense of a corner after United substitute Kaine Felix slipped through an attempted offside trap.
The Reds then made a double substitution with Sam Smith and Andi Thanoj replaced by Joe Ironside and Jamie Jackson respectively on 66 minutes.
Alfreton threw three up front and the Reds went close on 77 minutes with Joe Ironside stabbing just wide from Jamie Jackson’s neat ball into the penalty area.
The Reds finally began to piece some meaningful short passing together but the final ball was all too often lacking and Allan’s attempted cross was woefully inaccurate and wide.
The Reds finally reduced the arrears on 82 minutes. Sam Jones had a 25 yard blast deflected away for a corner  from which Boston failed to  clear and Joe Ironside finally forced the ball over the line from very close quarters after his initial effort came back of the base of a post.
With Jamie Jackson prominent down the left, the Reds won another corner as they exerted heavy late pressure.
Tom Allan headed just wide from Leesley’s cross as the game entered additional time then Liam Marrs cleared the danger with plenty of red shirts in the penalty area.
Ryan Wilson’s stunning goalbound volley was met by an equally impressive clearance by Zak Mills for the visitors before Jackson turned sharply and the last chance of the game inches wide of the post as Boston held out to clinch a league double over the Reds.
