DAVE PURSGLOVE'S MATCH PICTURE ALBUM HERE
Alfreton Town's final pre-season friendly did not go according to plan with visitors Solihull Moors surprising the Reds with a slick 4-1 victory on Friday night.
Duane Courtney missed the game through injury having sustained an ankle problem during the Rotherham United game three days earlier.
Solihull had taken the lead in fortuitous fashion after 11 minutes when Chris Smith's attempted clearance struck Omar Bogle and rebounded into the net, the goal stemming from a hectic goalmouth scramble that had been triggered by Bogle firing against the foot of the post.
It was 2-0 to the Moors on 23 minutes when Aaron Brown was left with a clear header from Michael Nottingham's cross, the goal arriving shortly after Jordan Gough had headed off the line from Bradley Wood's lethal corner.
Anthony Howell fired well wide from Jake Sheridan's 27th minute cross, but it needed a quality save from Jon Stewart to prevent Brown from adding to his tally five minutes later.
Alfreton met a stubborn defensive barrier as they threw themselves forward after the break, Dan Bradley's shot blocked by Brown, Wood's shot deflected wide and Lee Stevenson's effort saved by the keeper in a promising 48th minute.
However, 12 minutes later Solihull led by 3-0 when Darryl Knights' corner was turned in by Rob Elvins from close range, and salt was rubbed into the wounds six minutes later when another Knights' corner left Liam Daly with a simple header for their fourth goal.
Ironically the flag-kick had come from a superb save by Stewart that had seen the keeper palm Knights' shot into the ground and off the crossbar.
Jay McFadzean celebrated his first goal for the Reds when he found the net with a low drive from 12 yards from Lathaniel Rowe-Turner's driven cross, but with only four minutes of the game remaining it was purely a consolation for Alfreton.
