Alfreton Town's latest pre-season friendly saw a marked improvement, despite losing 2-1 to Port Vale at the lmpact Arena on Saturday.
Jamie Jackson put the Reds ahead after just five minutes with a well taken goal, after running on to a Jon Stewart punt and slotting the ball past Vale keeper Chris Neal.
Ryan Lloyd levelled the game 13 minutes later with a simple back post tap-in from a deep Louis Dodds cross, and as the clock ticked seconds past the 45-minute mark Carl Dickinson grabbed the winner with a close range header, ironically following a corner from a brilliant save by Stewart from Lloyd.
Nathan Hicks had been denied by Neal in the ninth minute and Lee Stevenson had fired over from a good position on 24 minutes, then 12 minutes later Ben Williamson almost re-enacted Van Persie's memorable diving header in the World Cup but the Port Vale striker was thwarted by the crossbar.
Luke Graham's timely tackle halted Colin Daniel's progress four minutes into the second half, then replacement keeper Sam Johnson prevented one of Alfreton's numerous trialists from equalising on the hour.
Johnson then saved a Duane Courtney header from a Dan Gray corner, then towards the end Stewart parried from Daniel who then put the rebound wide when it looked easier to score.
