Chorley 3-1 Alfreton Town

FT: Chorley 3    1 Alfreton Town

15 September 2018

Alfreton Town suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of runaway leaders Chorley on Saturday in their first game since selling top-scorer Tom Denton to Chesterfield.

The Magpies are nine points clear at the top of the National League North for a reason, but at least Alfreton had the consolation of being the first team to score against them at Victory Park this season - an absolute screamer from 20 yards by Bobby Johnson that surely must be a contender for "goal of the season".

Keeper Sam Ramsbottom was both hero and villain, accountable for all three goals conceded yet pulling off a string of top-class saves in the process.

The opening goal came after 21 minutes when a left wing cross was fumbled by Ramsbottom, allowing Marcus Carver to rifle home, then seven minutes later a harsh penalty decision went against the keeper when he ran into Louis Almond just inside the area, with Adam Blakeman duly thumping the ball into the back of the net from the spot.

Johnson's fantastic strike came out of the blue to perk up the visiting contingent on 33 minutes, but after a promising spell at the start of the second half Ramsbottom erred again, bringing down Josh Wilson on the hour for Blakeman to repeat his penalty success.

A flying save from Josh O'Keefe on 45 minutes, a superb stretching save from the same player midway through the second period and a gravity defying tip over from a hat-trick seeking Blakeman free-kick 13 minutes from time went some way to atoning amidst other important saves.

Denton's height and presence was certainly missed, Declan Bacon given a difficult first start up front, but there was a promising debut from ex-Spireite midfielder Jordan Sinnott to quell the anguish of back-to-back defeats.
