Stockport County 0-1 Alfreton Town

FT: Stockport County 0    1 Alfreton Town

25 August 2018

Alfreton Town recorded an historic win at Edgeley Park on Saturday as Tom Denton's first half header was enough for the Reds to make it back to back league wins.

Billy Heath made one change with a returning Bobby Johnson displacing Curtis Bateson, Josh Clackstone returned to the bench.

The contest started with the hosts looking to dictate the tempo and with a minute on the clock the Hatters had their first opening from a free kick which Palmer headed over the bar.

The Reds were under the cosh as Josh Gowling gave away a corner under pressure from Bell, with an over hit back pass. Palmer again found space from the resulting corner but he fired way over the bar.

With eight minutes gone the Reds stole the lead, a wonderfully worked move saw Josh Wilde plant a cross over to Tom Denton at the far post and the striker nodded in his fifth goal of the season.

The goal changed the complexion of the game and suddenly the Reds were on the front foot with Stockport defended James Clifton's long throws and Richard Peniket was denied via a block in the box.

Tom Platt nearly sent Callum Chettle through with a lofted pass before more Hatters defending denied Denton at the far post from a corner from Bobby Johnson.

Warburton curled a low free kick straight at Sam Ramsbottom as County struggled to respond to the chances created by the Reds. Platt salomed his way past Stockport challenges before shooting wide in the box.

Stockport wrestled control of the first half again as Askew fired into the side netting after good work from former Red Nyal Bell. Josh Gowling who was outstanding throughout was alert again to deny Mulhern an effort in the box.

The second half started in the same fashion as the first with the Hatters in control in the early stages before the Reds had their spell in the half before Stockport pushed again late on.

Bell headed wide from a Walker corner, another Walker corner came in which was cleared away before Gowling cleared the recycled Askew cross.

Bobby Johnson nearly made it two with a stunning free kick which he curled onto the crossbar.

Peniket then forced Hinchliffe into a point blank save from Johnson's corner but crucially at the other end Josh Wilde made an important tackle to deny a Hatters counter attack on the far touch-line.

Alfreton continued to create, Peniket dragged a shot wide in the box, before Denton did put the ball in the net but the offside flag was up much to the dispute of the Reds players in the aftermath.

Johnson curled another free kick just over the bar. County ramped the pressure up late on but the Reds defending remained strong, organised and determined.

Josh Clackstone entered the fray and settled into the back-line immediately, with Gowling, Clifton, Shiels all clearing cross after cross late on.

Ramsbottom denied Warburton's free kick and then flicked near post effort, Shiels denied Bell on at least two occasions in the final ten minutes, recovering well to tackle the County striker.

But Alfreton held on for an historic first ever win at Stockport and a first clean sheet of the season with an unbelievable performance on the road yet again.

The Reds move into the play offs and recorded back to back league wins. Next up, Southport visit the Impact Arena on Bank Holiday Monday with a 3pm kick off.
