Alfreton Town 0-1 Curzon Ashton

FT: Alfreton Town 0    1 Curzon Ashton

14 August 2018

Despite dominating Tuesday night's encounter with Curzon Ashton at the lmpact Arena Alfreton Town were hit by a 90th minute smash-and-grab as the visitors left with all three points.

It was one of those games where the Reds threw everything they could at the opposition, drawing many fine saves from keeper Cameron Mason, particularly in the first half, whilst squandering chance after chance with the visitors restricted to the occasional foray.

Joe Guest was Curzon's hero with a drive from the edge of the area that may have entered the net off Reds' skipper Luke Shiels, moments after Tom Denton had seen a header go inches wide of the target from a Danny Clarke cross.

The first opening of the game saw Denton tee up Richard Peniket for Mason to smother on the line in the tenth minute, then Denton hooked over a Tom Platt lay-off far side of the a Craig King cross.

Shiels sent a towering header just wide from King's 23rd minute corner, then Mason clawed away a Denton header from a King free-kick.

A long throw by James Clifton fell to Denton on the far side of the box, which led to a point-blank save by the busy keeper, then Peniket went close at the near post after Josh Wilde had played King down the left flank.

Curzon finally contributed to the game on 41 minutes, James Baillie volleying wide after Connor Hughes had burst down the right.

Five minutes after the break Josh Gowling highlighted a promising debut at the heart of the Reds' defence by tackling back well to halt Guest's central run, then as Curzon began to pose more of a threat Sam Ramsbottom had to save well from Hughes.

Denton headed over from a Wilde cross set up by Bateson on 73 minutes, then the tall striker headed wide from a Clifton cross as Alfreton continued to rack up, but not take, numerous chances.
