York City 1-2 Alfreton Town

FT: York City 1    2 Alfreton Town

11 August 2018

Alfreton Town produced a fine display of counter attacking and crucial defending as the Reds claimed a brilliant win at York City on Saturday afternoon.

Billy Heath made just the one change from the Brackley defeat with Curtis Bateson replacing Bobby Johnson who missed out through a groin problem. Danny Clarke returned to the bench.

The hosts, as expected, started brightly with Luke Shiels having to be alert numerous times in the opening few minutes. The Reds were looking immediately for Tom Denton as Tait and Bencherif struggled to deal with the Reds giant up front.

The opening goal came on 13 minutes from a gorgeous set piece from James Clifton which found Denton unmarked at the far post and he powered a header into the corner to silence the home crowd.

It was soon two when a slip from Tait allowed Curtis Bateson to run clean through and the winger showed excellent composure to roll the ball past Bartlett and into the empty net.

The two goal lead out of nowhere sprung alarm bells in the York players as the contest took a heated turn, Denton appeared to be elbowed challenging for the ball with no card showed for Sean Newton in the process.

The problems continued for the hosts with Richard Peniket and Denton forcing clearance after clearance as the balls forward to the Reds strikers continued.

Bateson had another effort which was blocked outside the box as City defended strongly against the long throws of Clifton and the aerial balls forward.

Peniket then had a golden chance for 0-3 on 27 minutes, turning his man in the box but Bartlett raced out well to smother the ball out for a corner.

The hosts began to show signs of a response with Shiels, Denton and King all defending well from sucessive corners. Bencherif then peeled into space in the box but headed over the bar.

The second half saw frustration gradually increase amongst the home fans and the City players, Tom Platt and Bateson were a constant menance in midfield, winning the ball back and clearing impending danger.

On 58 minutes the Reds were awarded a penalty when Bateson was tripped in the box. Peniket stepped up but was denied by Bartlett who guessed the right way.

The miss rallied York and rallied the home fans, Langstaff and Parkin were introduced and changed the tempo of the game. Bencherif headed another York corner over the bar before City did pull one back.

A neat turn from Langstaff in the box saw him finish low into the corner past Sam Ramsbottom in City's first meaningful attack of the game.

Billy Heath introduced Danny Clarke to close things up as Ramsbottom continued to hold firm in the box collecting crosses from Newton.

York's approach turned direct with crosses late on looking for Parkin but Wilde, Shiels and Denton all defended them with unwavering desire.

Alfreton stayed firm and held on for an outstanding three points and a first win of the season.
