Alfreton Town 2-0 Chesterfield

FT: Alfreton Town 2    0 Chesterfield

28 July 2018

Alfreton Town's final pre-season game saw them comfortably beat Chesterfield in the A61 derby on Saturday at the lmpact Arena.

Manager Billy Heath has assembled a team that has progressed throughout July to a point where they are ready for the season opener at home to Kidderminster Harriers next Saturday, the icing on the cake this 2-0 victory through goals by Richard Peniket and Tom Denton.

Yet the star of the show could not even be named, with the Reds' trialist keeper making several eye-catching saves throughout a game that saw blustery wind and heavy rain dictate conditions.

Peniket's 12th minute opener stemmed from a long James Clifton throw that was headed across goal by Denton, the latter doubling Alfreton's advantage 17 minutes into the second half with a back post header from a Craig King cross.

An early King cross aimed for Denton was scrambled behind by Jordan Sinnott, then Peniket fired over following a strong run by Callum Chettle.

Chesterfield's first real chance came after 25 minutes when Lee Shaw could only find the side-netting from an astute Sam Wedgbury delivery, then Joe Rowley's cross saw Ify Ofoegbu squander a clear chance.

Five minutes after the break Luke Shiels' shot was blocked by Jamie Sharman, then on the hour Chettle played King through for keeper Joe Anyon to parry.

Levi Amantchi's through-ball for Shaw looked certain to be a goal for the Spireites until the Red's un-named keeper pulled off a defiant block, a double save then marking the 81st minute as Shaw's shot when clear was saved before Laurence Maguire's effort from the resultant corner ended similarly.

The mysterious keeper rounded off a fine performance with a breathtaking tip over from Maguire's 88th minute blast that looked destined for the top corner of the net.
