Alfreton Town 1-0 Matlock Town

FT: Alfreton Town 1    0 Matlock Town

05 December 2017

Alfreton Town enjoyed a much needed victory on Tuesday night as they edged through their Derbyshire Senior Cup tie against neighbours Matlock Town by a solitary goal at the lmpact Arena - their first home win in three months and their first clean sheet since August.

Thanks to an Andre Johnson goal after 62 minutes the Reds will now tread new ground when they visit New Mills in the New Year in their quarter-final tie.

It was an untidy goal, with as much uncertainty about who had actually scored it as there had been three days earlier against Bradford Park Avenue, Johnson eventually credited with chesting home a Marcus Marshall corner after viable claims that either Tom Allan or Tom Platt had provided the final touch.

Matlock gave a very good account of themselves, although they will rue some of the chances they squandered, particularly in the first half, but local bragging rights returned along the A615 to Alfreton after the Gladiators had triumphed on penalties in last season's semi-final at Causeway Lane.

The main culprit was former Reds' striker Shaun Harrad, whose 40th minute shot was partially cleared by Platt before he blazed the rebound wide, then in the second half he twice had clear chances that were dealt with by Chris Elliott in the Alfreton goal.

Michael Williams went desperately close with a crashing volley from just outside the area that almost skimmed the crossbar, and the same player drew a fine save from Elliott, while later in the tie Dwayne Wiley headed wide from a Rhys Sharpe corner.

For the Reds Chris Sharp headed over from a Cieron Keane cross, Allan's header was blocked from a Brendon Daniels corner and Marcus Day was denied by veteran keeper Phil Barnes before Academy striker Morgan Brough fired straight at Barnes when sent through by Marshall late on.
