Alfreton Town 1-4 Spennymoor Town

FT: Alfreton Town 1    4 Spennymoor Town

07 April 2018

Alfreton Town were dealt a huge blow on Saturday when they lost 1-4 to Spennymoor Town in a vital National League North game at the lmpact Arena, the only crumb of comfort being results elsewhere which prevented the Reds from sliding further into trouble.

The visitors took their chances well, building a two-goal lead by half-time thanks to a wonder strike from all of 35 yards by Nathan Lowe on 36 minutes and a simple follow-up by Glen Taylor in the 45th minute after Viktor Johannson had parried a shot from Shane Henry.

Nyal Bell gave Alfreton hope with a 61st minute strike from just under 25 yards, but Taylor went on to complete his hat-trick with simple finishes in the 79th and 90th minutes to emphasise the Reds' plight.

To make matters worse skipper and influential defender Luke Shiels limped off seven minutes from time, and having utilised all three substitutes already Alfreton were forced to play out the remainder of the game with ten men, no doubt a contributory factor to conceding the fourth goal.

The hosts' best effort of the first half came on 17 minutes when Chris Sharp's powerful drive was turned behind by former Reds' keeper Dan Lowson, with Tom Allan glancing a header wide from the ensuing Brendon Daniels corner.

Nine minutes later Daniels' driven cross was dropped by Lowson but Chris Chantler was able to hack clear, whilst at the other end Johansson needed to save from both Lowe and Taylor before the deadlock was broken.

Eight minutes after the break Craig Westcarr turned neatly to fire at the target, but Lowson brought off a superb diving save, Spennymoor breaking swiftly from the resultant corner to force an equally fine save as Johansson defied Ryan Hall.

With Alfreton's hopes buoyed by Bell's contribution, just four minutes after reducing the deficit Sharp agonisingly headed against the crossbar from an Allan throw, the action swinging again in the opposite direction though with Sam Topliss having to clear off the line from David Foley.

Heads visibly dropped though after Taylor had restored Spennymoor's two-goal advantage and there was little more that Alfreton could conjure up in response.
