Bradford Park Avenue 3-3 Alfreton Town

FT: Bradford Park Avenue 3    3 Alfreton Town

10 March 2018

Alfreton Town were involved in a six-goal thriller at Bradford Park Avenue on Saturday in atrocious conditions, with heavy rain making an already soggy pitch extremely difficult to defend on.

The Reds would have taken a draw before the game with the hosts riding high, but having led twice there was ultimately a tinge of disappointment at conceding a late equaliser.

However with no less than five enforced changes through suspension and injury Alfreton can still view the outcome as a positive result, although they fell behind rather easily on 15 minutes when defender Matt Hill overlapped to slide Adam Boyes' through-ball past keeper Viktor Johansson.

The Reds responded with a strong Ryan Jennings run that gave Nyal Bell a glimpse of the target, but hesitation allowed home keeper Ed Hall to block, then at the other end Johansson saved well from Boyes.

Alfreton were level by the half-hour mark though with a superb strike from Tom Platt, who latched on to a loose ball before advancing and firing home from 20 yards, then on 34 minutes Bradford's Oli Johnson somehow contrived to shoot against the upright with the goal at his mercy.

Chris Sharp forced a corner and Tom Allan looped a header over from a James Baxendale flag-kick, but with six minutes of the first half remaining Sharp turned on the edge of the area to shoot past Hall from a Baxendale return pass to give the Reds an interval advantage.

Johnson brought Bradford back on level terms in the 62nd minute with a simple back post header from a deep Mark Ross cross, but Alfreton edged ahead again ten minutes later, thanks to an inspired substitution.

Brendon Daniels had been rested for the game but when a free-kick was awarded just outside the area the dead-ball specialist was summoned into action, and with his first touch floated the ball off the defensive wall and beyond Hall's reach.

The home side pressed and pressed and seemed to have been held at arm's length until Danny Boshell managed to prod a Johnson cross past Johansson with just two minutes left on the clock.
