York City1-1 Alfreton Town

FT: York City 1    1 Alfreton Town

24 February 2018

Alfreton Town picked up a vital point from their visit to York City on Saturday, but still remain just three points clear of the relegation spots, despite gaining a place in the National League North table.

The Reds found themselves a goal down after just five minutes when Simon Heslop was allowed to score with an angled drive from a quickly taken free-kick that evidently caught the defenders out.

Alfreton responded positively and Tom Allan's by-line cross almost succeeded in finding Nyal Bell, the latter then attempting and failing with successive overhead kicks in a bid to surprise the home side.

Allan was already proving to be a thorn in the Minstermen's side with a withering central run that ended by the defender shooting wide on 18 minutes, then Bell slipped at the moment he latched on to James Baxendale's astute through-ball and another chance went begging.

However perseverance was the key word as Alfreton plugged away in search of an equaliser, and in the 38th minute up popped York resident Allan to fittingly head home Brendon Daniels' free-kick to restore parity.

The best chance of a dour second period saw Marcus Marshall guide a back-post header across the face of goal from another accurate Daniels free-kick on 49 minutes, then as the hosts toiled and flailed in front of their increasingly frustrated supporters Cieron Keane was only just beaten to a loose ball by keeper Adam Bartlett with seven minutes remaining.

York did have their chances, with Reds' keeper Viktor Johansson called upon to make crucial saves from both Alex Pattison and Alex Kempster, but generally the play-off aspirants were comfortably kept at arm's length by a determined Alfreton rearguard.
