Gainsborough Trinity 2-1 Alfreton Town

FT: Gainsborough Trinity 2    1 Alfreton Town

27 January 2018

Chris Moyses tasted defeat for the first time at the helm when Alfreton Town were beaten by Gainsborough Trinity on Saturday, despite the Reds having a fair share of the proceedings.

Alfreton were forced to start the game without Tom Platt, after the midfielder had picked up a foot injury in the mid-week win at Blyth Spartans, and were without loan signing Elliot Hodge, who had sustained a head injury in the same game.

Early chances for the Reds had seen Brendon Daniels, Ryan Jennings and Kegan Everington go close, while Chris Sharp forced home keeper Henrich Ravas to tip over his header from an off-side position, but it was the hosts that snatched the lead with their first productive foray into Alfreton territory.

It was a 31st minute corner that had been the outcome of Cieron Keane's block from Shane Clarke that led to the opening goal, the ball worked out to former Reds' striker Nathan Jarman, whose shot from the edge of the area cannoned off the upright to beat Chris Elliott.

Jennings then embarked on a penetrative run that ended with his shot being dragged wide, then the same player saw his effort blocked by Michael Jacklin after taking a return pass from Sharp.

Ravas had to tip over an awkward, swirling punt from deep right by Bradley Wood eight minutes after the break, but the score was level at 1-1 with an hour elapsed when Daniels whipped in a precision cross for Luke Shiels to head home at the back post, the move initiated by a Daniels' corner that had only been partially cleared.

However Gainsborough had the last word with 11 minutes remaining, when a sliced clearance allowed Jarman to send Craig King through to score from 16 yards with Alfreton's defence momentarily caught out of position.

The Reds tried hard to salvage the situation but could not breach a determined Trinity rearguard, Daniels going closest with a free-kick on 90 minutes.
