Alfreton Town 4-1 Leamington FC

FT: Alfreton Town 4    1 Leamington

20 January 2018

The new managerial era at the lmpact Arena made the best possible start with a resounding 4-1 victory over Leamington FC on Saturday to record the Reds' first home win in the National League North since beating Gainsborough Trinity by the same score back on September 9th.

There was certainly a fresh air of confidence about the team, although it took much of the first half for them to settle into the game, but Alfreton were certainly helped by a couple of rash decisions made by visiting keeper and captain Tony Breeden.

ln the 34th minute Breeden chased Ryan Jennings across the area before bringing him down with a clumsy challenge, with Brendon Daniels once again obliging from the penalty spot to put the Reds ahead.

Then nine minutes later a clearance from the keeper went straight to Ceiron Keane on the half-way line, the wing back seizing his opportunity to lob the ball into an empty net with unerring accuracy.

Earlier Chris Sharp had broken through only to blaze over his angled drive, Craig Disley had a volley blocked and Daniels had gone close after a fluent move made possible by Keane and Disley.

However there was a major let-off for Alfreton nine minutes before the opening goal, keeper Chris Elliott needing three attempts at dealing with a Kieran Dunbar corner, initially punching it under pressure before parrying the loose ball against the inside of the upright and finally catching the rebound.

The third goal came just three minutes into the second half, with Jennings sweeping a Keane cross past Breeden from 12 yards, but seconds earlier new player/coach Lee Beevers had highlighted an impressive defensive debut with a reflex header to keep out a rasping drive from Kaine Felix.

It was 4-0 to the Reds by the 57th minute, Keane again on the score-sheet with an outstanding goal, this time sprinting from the half-way line to plant the ball past Breeden after dispossessing Junior English.

Callum Gittings somehow contrived to miss a gilt-edged chance for the Brakes on 59 minutes, tapping the ball into Elliott's grasp from close range, then 14 minutes later came a superb double save by Elliott from Joe Clarke on both occasions.

Leamington deserved their consolation for never throwing the towel in, but needed a questionable hand-ball decision against Sam Topliss on 89 minutes to allow Liam Canavan to score from the spot.
