Spennymoor Town 2-1 Alfreton Town

FT: Spennymoor Town 2    1 Alfreton Town

23 September 2017

Alfreton Town lost their first game in eight outings when the were beaten 2-1 at Spennymoor Town on Saturday in the National League North.

As many as six injuries meant that manager John McDermott had to swap Bradley Wood to left-back, with Tom Allan retaining his place at the heart of the defence to cover for Billy Priestley.

The injury that midfielder Adam Smith picked up in midweek allowed new signing Kegan Everington to step into the breach, his first minute through-ball giving Ricky German the opportunity to score, but hesitation allowed the keeper to gather.

Allan's header from a Brendon Daniels free-kick won an eighth minute corner, but Reds' keeper Chris Elliott needed to make a flying save from Matt Dixon seven minutes later.

Mid-way through the first half Everington made a goal-line clearance from Shane Henry, but no-one could prevent the same player from giving the Moors a 25th minute lead with a downward header from a right flank corner, with Alfreton once again succumbing to a set piece.

Everington went on to strike the ball against the post from a difficult angle just two minutes after the Reds had conceded, Ryan Jennings' cross having set up a Brendon Daniels header.

Allan headed wide from a deep Sam Topliss cross seven minutes after the interval, then Elliott again saved well from David Foley on two occasions before Jennings went close with a dipping shot from a Daniels corner.

A needless penalty conceded in the 85th minute settled the issue after Jennings had brought down Robert Ramshaw, Chris Elliott sent the wrong way from the spot by Joe Tait.

However in the third minute of added time a Daniels delivery from the right saw Jennings smash the ball against the underside of the crossbar, with Allan on hand to head home from close range.

And there was still time for Allan to unleash a thunderbolt of a shot after Chris Sharp had received a desperate punt from Wood, but the ball sailed narrowly past the upright to conclude a disappointing afternoon for Alfreton.
