Alfreton Town 4-0 Curzon Ashton

FT: Alfreton Town 4    0 Curzon Ashton

28 August 2017

Alfreton Town's convincing win over Curzon Ashton on Bank Holiday Monday was just what the doctor ordered, particularly after the promising performance in defeat two days earlier.

On a blistering hot afternoon at the lmpact Arena there was an incredible trilogy of "goal of the season" contenders, led by Adam Smith who sent Alfreton on their way with just 12 minutes elapsed, leaving everyone stunned at the quality of his strike with a sublime left-footer from fully 20 yards after jinking past a couple of defenders on the right.

The Reds would undoubtedly have added to their tally but for a superb save by Curzon keeper Cameron Mason to prevent Craig Westcarr from scoring in the 24th minute, then ten minutes later a good cross from Smith was headed wide of the back post by Tom Allan.

The visitors had had precious little involvement until the 49th minute, when Andreas Bianga's awkward cross had to be hacked clear sweeper-style by Reds' keeper Chris Elliott with Joe Guest ready to convert, but at the other end Steve Howson's careless back-pass almost beat a bemused Mason.

Another pin-point delivery from wide right by Smith in the 64th minute left Westcarr with the simplest of headers to double Alfreton's advantage, then Allan saw his header held from a Smith free-kick as the hosts dominated proceedings.

More was to come with Tom Platt volleying home mercilessly from 20 yards as flustered Curzon defenders tried to clear the ball in the 89th minute, and not prepared to miss out on the spectacular goal-fest Brendon Daniels cut inside before curling an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net from at least 25 yards three minutes into added time.

Add to that Platt's 79th minute attempted chip that came back off the bar, ironically for Smith to make the miss of the game, and Ricky German's exquisite chip that looked far more difficult to stay out of the net than bounce in after he had beaten visiting keeper Cameron Mason to Westcarr's through-ball 17 minutes from time.
