Alfreton edged through to the Second Round of the Buildbase FA Trophy, thanks to Ryan Wilson's spectacular 25 yard volley after 63 minutes, at the Impact Arena.
It may not have been a classic, but it was the Red's second National League scalp of the season , following their win over Gateshead in the FA Cup some 52 days earlier. The visitors had a good recent record in the competition, following their win over Wrexham in the 2015 final. Just as in the Gateshead game, Adam Smith hobbled off early in the encounter, to be replaced by Craig Westcarr.
The Red's started brightly with Sam Smith having an early goal ruled out, for off-side in the first minute of the contest. The two Smith's worked well together five minutes later, with Sam's touch at the near post from Adam's cross, being gathered by the Ferriby keeper, Roy Watson.
A crucial tackle by by Niall Heaton, prevented Reece Thompson from firing the visitors in front after 13 minutes. Westcarr curled a free kick into the hands of Watson, then headed wide after Andy Monkhouse had nodded a Heaton cross into his path.
The first half ended with Brad McGowan clearing a shot from Curtis Bateson, off the line.
After the break, Paul Clayton, glanced a header wide from a Westcarr free-kick on 51 minutes. Watson then had to make a save from a Westcarr header, after a Monkhouse cross. The Villager's keeper was helpless, to prevent the Red's taking the lead from Wilson's 25 yard scorcher, which flew into the top corner.
Clayton had a 69th minute header cleared off the line as the Reds pressed forwards again. Speiss had to make a reflex save from Ross Armstrong, but Alfreton saw the game out, being good value for the win and in the process collecting £5,000 prize money for making the next round.
